Call center openings and closings from around North America and the world. In this week's news: Apple ditches its India call center plans and HP looks into Bulgaria.
- Hewlett-Packard is opening an Eastern European call center in Sofia, Bulgaria. One thousand agents will handle calls from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

- TeleTech Holdings is closing its 148-person Melbourne, Florida call center. The company will move those operations elsewhere; company reps aren't saying where.

- Orem, Utah-based data collector Western Wats will open a call center in Thatcher, Arizona, employing as many as 120 people.

- Apple Computers will not open a call center in India after all.

- Nationwide Credit of Kennesaw, Georgia will hire 455 people over three years for its Vestal, New York call center. This is good news for the debt collection agency -- it had to lay off 211 workers a few months ago when it lost a contract with MCI.

- Smoke-Free Colorado has opened a call center to field questions about the state's new Clean Indoor Air Act, which goes into effect July 1. Agents will take calls from mid-June to about the end of July.

- Comcast Cable will be building an 80,000 square-foot call center in suburban Chicago. Hiring for 500 positions will begin in December.

- Toronto outsourcer Minacs' call center in Halifax, Nova Scotia is hiring 300 people, bringing its ranks up to more than 1,100.
